NRA member: yes, no, maybe someday, or no way?

I am not now, nor have I ever been, an NRA member. However, I'm thinking about it just so I can compete in sanctioned competetive matches and get out of un-ranked league shooting. I'm a 2A supporter that is otherwise an odd (to some) mix of center-left and libertarian political leanings. I'm ambivalent about the NRA. How do you feel about it?

I used to be a member. At some point when the economy gets better I'd like to get back into it.

There are a lot of people who feel the NRA is either too much this or not enough that, but I am a member because I think they are an organization actively working to further our gun rights and the shooting sports. I've seen our local NRA legislative liaison working closely with state level 2A groups during the legislative session. I've attended and volunteered at Friends of the NRA banquets, raising money to help fund youth shooting groups to bring the next generation of firearms owners into the fold. I've seen NRA coaches spend hours helping competitors achieve their goals.

The NRA isn't doing everything I'd like but they are doing some damn fine things. I am proud to be a Benefactor Life member.

I've been a member for a while. Sometimes I forget to renew and go a while without it, then I re-up. Sometime, when they're having a sale and I have the funds to spare, I'll get the life membership, but the money just finds other places to be useful.

CSACANNONEER, I clicked on your link. Impressive savings on NRA memberships! How is it you get to offer 1/3 off? Is it because of your NRA Instructor status? Just curious. Anyway, I'm just about ready to join. How long will your offer stand?

I've been researching the NRA to see if they have ever taken a position on a non-gun related issue, and have found nothing. Several board members have made outrageously homophobic statements over the years, but in each case they were speaking for themselves and not for the organization. As long as the NRA, as an institution, scrupulously sticks to 2nd Amendment issues I'm good with that.

When Wayne LaPierre is no longer running the show, maybe then...but certainly not until then!

I will never understand this attitude.

What's not to understand?  I think he's an exceptionally poor communicator and an even worse PR man.  Any and every organization rises and falls on the quality of its leadership.  LaPierre is a buffoon.  Until he's no longer at the helm, the NRA has zero chance of leading the 2A debate in a way the antis cannot defend against.

I can see where you're coming from. Wayne does have some shortcomings in communication skills and is perhaps not the best person to have fronting for the organization. I look beyond that to all the good I see the NRA doing on both the national and local scenes. Given the dire straits our 2A rights are in these days, being a member of an organization which is actively fighting the fight just makes sense to me. YMMV and it is certainly your decision.

Life time member, NRA instructor, as well as instructing in other disciplines.  Currently NRA is the only wall between the loss of the 2nd amendment, although the 2nd amendment is being lost state by state. Hawaii, New York, Illinois.... Once something is gone it usually never returns.
