Who has an amateur radio license?
« on: September 12, 2016, 12:35:37 AM »
KE0JJG checking in here.  I only have my Technicians license, but for the peppers out there, it really opens things up.

If anyone has any questions about how the get licensed, feel free to ask away.

I've got my Technician's license.  I was 1 question off from getting my General - I think I'm gonna go back and get my General soon, because I really want to try some HF on NVIS.

Just got my General, and I have an old 50W SSB rig on the way, so I should be on the air soon!  Trying to figure out all this antenna stuff...

A few more and we may have enough for a Pink Pistols Net  :)
I've actually been kicking around the idea of starting an off-grid net here in Portland, OR.
Open to all, but emphasis on using battery or generator power to check in to the net.
Plan is to maybe meet first on a local FM repeater, then move over to HF.

Has anyone used the MFJ 94XX series of radios?  It strikes me that a 9440 might just be exactly what a prepper needs - Simple, inexpensive, small, light, battery-efficient, and reliable enough for medium range comms with a NVIS antenna.

It irks me to have to spend $1k to get a radio with a bunch of features I don't want or need.  I don't care about being able to operate on a ton of bands with a ton of power, and I'm not gonna be playing with digital modes.  Just get me on the air on a couple select frequencies in a light package that's easy on a battery.

W0TTM here.
Old school (20 wpm) extra.
I like the idea of a net.
Let's help the Tech's here upgrade and tear up the lower bands.
